Tell us about overnight stops while on the road.

The topic of overnight stops gets a little complicated, so there are a couple pages dedicated to the subject.

For us, life on the road is a series of 'destinations' with periods of travel mixed in. We usually motor with a destination in mind - we do not wander aimlessly about the country. While on the road we have to make overnight stops to rest.

When stopping overnight we require few services or amenities. We do not do laundry, go swimming, or go sightseeing. We usually hook up to electric and water, but usually do not hook up to sewer services. We prefer not to unhook the towed vehicle.

This situation is what created an issue between RV enthusiasts and Campground owners. The dispute as gone on for years. My personal take on the two sides of the issue is this:

  • RVers desire an inexpensive place to stay while on the road. A place where they do not have to pay for services and amenities which are not used.
  • Campground owners need customers - RVers - to make their businesses profitable. They believe that RVers should always be forced to make rest stops at campgrounds.
  • These two conflicting needs have resulted in campground owners associations introducing legislation that would make it illegal for RVers to park in business parking lots overnight. Numerous RV associations and RV Clubs fight to suppress such legislation.

My personal solution to the issue would be to have campground owners provide a no-frills area and rate to RVers just needing a rest stop. Campground owners need to understand that a rate like $30 a night is simply too much for many RVers to pay for an overnight stop. We just want a place to have some dinner, sleep, brew our morning coffee, and then we're back on the road.
